Most people are looking for a roll number. But there
is so much information that is needed, before you can look at the rolls,
this space is intended only to get you started on the right foot.
Enter the full date (12 Dec 1918) don't use just the
last two numbers in the year (18).
Use the female's maiden name. The male on the pedigree
chart is always an even number except when you start with that person,
the female is always an uneven number.Glean all the information from documents
that you and other relatives have, birth, death, obit, marriage, this is
only a few items that you might have.
Document your sources, so you and other persons can
go back to that source and relook at the information.
WHO(name) - WHAT (event)- WHEN (date)- WHERE (place)
There are the four questions you are trying to answer.
For each person you have on your pedigree chart.
Start with your self and fill in a pedigree chart with
names, dates, and places, this will be your road map, it will let you see
the info that you have and the info that you still need, work back until
you have enough info to look at the
1900
Census which was also an Indian Census, do the 1930, 1920, 1910 then the
1900
.
Look at regular records, like census, court, newspaper,
family histories, cemetery records, church, marriage.
Social Security records for the people that died after
about 1938, it will list parents names, places and dates. Also I would
try and find out about work records.
To determine which roll the Dawes or Miller roll to
look at, you need to know if your ancestors were in the Cherokee Nation
in Oklahoma or somewhere else around 1900. If in the Cherokee Nation look
at the Dawes roll, if they were any where else look at the Miller Roll.
Remember that not every Cherokee enrolled.
If your ancestors were East of the Mississippi, and
stayed there, also check the Baker rolls.
